Under the scent of hidden foliage and rain

This is a way of looking at the birth, the connection and the decay of things underneath the serenity and tenderness of Nature. Since 2020, the fact that the world is now entering the stage of ‘the new normal’ – in which we have to avoid close contact, and every human interaction thereby becomes especially precious – makes me feel more about the continuity of life in groups and in solitude.

I have read somewhere that if you exert an external force on a mushroom, other mushrooms of the same cluster will also sense it, such is a connection we cannot see with our naked eye. I think for human beings, the need to connect and be empathized lies somewhere deep down in our soul, and it is even more evident in the context of limited social interaction. When it is impossible to interact directly, people will find other ways to connect with each other. And those connections go on, developing into billions of branches they could possibly lead to. Then deaths, either familiar or foreign, do happen all the time, but this whole pandemic situation is making us more aware of it – an emotional shock that is central to the life of every creature.

That process made me think more of the life forms hidden in the forest that kept proliferating and silently connecting with each other, then slowly lost its life and became the nourishment giving birth to other life forms, like an endless and silent loop. And the rains. Rain is, for me, also a social connection. Rain, dew, water, and evaporation evoke a sense of shelter, fertility, equality and ease. They mingle and decay together, creating ‘the scent of life’ through branches, roots, rocks and underground water, just like the untold stories in the lives of billions solitary individuals on this planet.

Đây là một góc nhìn về sự sinh sôi, kết nối và suy tàn của vạn vật trong bức màn thanh thản, dịu dàng của thiên nhiên. Năm 2020, việc cả thế giới phải ngưng các hoạt động kết nối trực tiếp với nhau và bước vào một nhịp sống hoàn toàn khác trong đó mọi sự tương tác mang tính con người trở nên đặc biệt quý giá khiến tôi cảm nhận nhiều hơn về sự tiếp diễn của đời sống trong tập thể và trong đơn độc.

Tôi từng đọc rằng nếu ta tác động ngoại lực lên một cây nấm, thì tất cả các cây nấm còn lại trong quần thể đều cảm nhận được chuyện đó, trong một kết nối mà ta không thể nhìn được bằng mắt thường. Tôi cho rằng người ta luôn có một nhu cầu kết nối và được đồng cảm ở nơi thẳm sâu nào đó trong tâm hồn, và nó càng rõ ràng hơn trong hoàn cảnh bị hạn chế tương tác xã hội. Khi không thể tương tác trực tiếp, con người sẽ tìm mọi cách để kết nối với nhau. Và những sự mất mát, dù xa lạ hay gần gũi , sẽ luôn xảy ra, trong cơn khủng hoảng khiến ta nhận thức rõ ràng hơn về nó như là một yếu tố hiển nhiên trong đời sống.

Quá trình đó làm tôi nghĩ về những thể sống ẩn mình trong rừng cứ sinh sôi và âm thầm kết nối với nhau rồi chết dần và trở thành nguồn nuôi dưỡng những thể sống khác như một vòng lặp bất tận và lặng yên. Và những cơn mưa. Mưa đối với tôi cũng là một kết nối mang tính xã hội. Mưa - sương - nước mang lại cảm giác che phủ, dịu mát và sinh sôi. Chúng hòa quyện và phân rã cùng nhau tạo nên mùi của sự sống với nhánh cành, cội rễ, đất đá cùng với những mạch nước ngầm, giống như những câu chuyện kín đáo ẩn tàng trong đời sống của hàng tỉ cá thể con người đơn độc trên hành tinh này.
